Quick answer: A payline slot pays through specified symbol patterns, while a ways-to-win slot may count matching symbols across adjacent reels. The exact rules are shown in the game's paytable.
Visit Winshark ↗Fixed and adjustable paylines
A fixed-payline game uses a set number of lines. Some games let the player select how many lines are active; changing the line count can also change the stake and potential winning patterns.

Ways-to-win mechanics
Ways games usually count matching symbols on neighbouring reels rather than on a drawn line. Reels, wilds and special symbols can change the rules, so check the paytable for the selected title.
Compare the total stake
A per-line stake can make the total round stake larger than the number first shown. Before spinning, confirm the total cost of the round and the prize table.

Frequently asked questions
Are more paylines always better?
No. More active lines can change the total stake. Compare cost and rules rather than the line count alone.
Where can I see a slot's rules?
Open the title's information panel or paytable before playing.
